North Street Pumping Station

Have you ever wondered how potable water is delivered to your home or business? Probably the first thing everyone thinks about are the distribution mains and water tower. In addition to the mains and water tower, pumping stations are used to maintain system pressure and move/distribute water to our customers. These stations operate daily, and the number and types of pumps used vary depending on system demand.

MMU has two (2) pumping stations, the North St. Pumping Station and the Miami St. Pumping Station. The North St. Pumping Station was first constructed in 1945 and has had several upgrades since construction, the last being in 1989. Miami St. Pumping Station was added to system in 1972 to support the addition of Wilson Foods and system growth. The longevity and performance of our pumping stations is a direct reflection of our maintenance program, a source of great pride among our employees.

In 2021, the Board of Public Works (BPW) approved moving forward with the upgrade/replacement of the North St. Pumping Station equipment and controls. MMU partnered with Burns & McDonnell utilizing the design build process and began work in July 2023. This project includes replacement of all motors, pumps, valves, piping; upgrade of the electric panels and replacement of the diesel pump with an electric pump, generator and auto-transfer switch. Building renovations are also part of the project, including replacement of the roof, windows, doors and tuckpointing along with asbestos and lead paint abatement. This project is estimated to be completed in 2024 and should serve the citizens of Marshall for many years.
